Here we find two Agents of Creation at work:
• The Spirit (or Life, Power) of God
• The Word (or Voice, Revealed Will) of God
God’s Spirit provides the power of Creation; His Word directs His plan for Creation. God speaks most of Creation into existence. He says, “Let there be light” and there is light. Most of Creation is not given a choice of whether to yield to His Power and Purpose or not. He speaks; Creation obeys.
However, with the creation of humanity something very interesting happens. Scripture tells us that God forms the man, and then breathes into him the breath of life (or Spirit of God). Then Man is the first creation given a choice of whether to abide in the Life of God or not. God instructs man that he is free to eat from any tree, except the “tree of the knowledge of good and evil.”
Man is given a choice of whether to obey God’s Voice or not. By obeying God’s Voice, Man will continue to share in God’s Life. By rebelling against God’s Voice, Man no longer shares in God’s Life. So it was our rebellion to God’s Will which separated us from the Life that God desired to share with us. Humanity was deceived into thinking real freedom was found outside of the Will of God. Allured by a lie we discovered the hard way that real freedom had been lost with our rebellion. Separated from the Power of God it is impossible to obey the Will of God, and as long as we are outside of the Will of God we will remain cut off from the Life of God. Without a Redeemer, we would remain forever trapped outside of the Will and Power of God.
Conceived through the Spirit of God, Jesus is that Redeemer. From conception, Jesus is sent empowered by the Life of God to perfectly live within the Will of God. As John 1:14 says, “The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us...” By living a life or obedience, then crossing the line of death out of obedience to the Will of God, instead of rebellion, death had no hold on him and He is able to make a way for us back into the Life and Will of God. By trusting in Jesus’ Life we are able to share in the Life of God. Jesus is Eternal Life. Eternal Life is not something we receive from Him; Eternal Life is Someone we receive to empower us to live once again within the Will of God.
